A British Tour of New Zealand in a Motorcaravan - a review ...

The following review appeared in the August edition of Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM):

MOTORCARAVANNING BY PC

In 'A British Tour of New Zealand', David Berry follows the style of his earlier CD `book' on his tour of the USA in his motorcaravan that was shipped across for the purpose. We commented enthusiastically about that CD in Marketplace, February 2004.

The two-month rental tour of New Zealand did not require the same detailed planning as the American adventure, but all aspects of organising, executing, and weighing up the success of the trip are faithfully documented. This provides entertainment for interested readers and lots of background and guidance for those who contemplate a similar experience. 1500 good photographs illustrate the daily log.

A second disc recently produced by David, 'An Area Guide for Caravannners and Motorhomers' is a very different work. This is essentially a personal view of 40 campsites (mostly Caravan Club) and Caravan Club CLs and their surroundings. As the author explains, there is little point in his duplicating the basic information that is contained in the campsite guides. In fact, there is very little text at all about the sites themselves where, I consider, some appraisal of the atmosphere and immediate surroundings would have been in order, since this whole work is essentially a personal view. It is the numerous captioned photographs that portray not only the sites themselves but nearby communities, parks, and various other attractions within a considerable distance.

Specific driving tours are copiously illustrated. Walks from or near the site are annotated and the pictures take you to every view and point of interest. On top of that is a shot of every turn in the route. Links take your PC to the appropriate OS map via a web site. The 40 sites can be located using three indexes: a map, and alphabetical lists by site name and by place name. Links are provided to many features of the area. David's boundless enthusiasm for this medium will ensure that, over time, further sites and their localities will be added to the collection

The screen presentation of these two works is attractive and well laid-out. Operation of the programs is notably user friendly. You may think that the vast numbers (into the thousands in each work) of photographs are overdone, but of course you do not need to dwell upon any one. It all goes to show what you can get on a CD at minimal cost.
